COASTAL DESIGN IN THE BACKYARD
Home to television personality and funny man Wil Anderson and his partner Amy Williamson, this property has a hitherto undisclosed secret — a quirky coastal-inspired backyard designed for making the most of Sydney’s spring and summer weather.
The whimsical fish-shaped swimming pool is the focal point of the recently renovated rear garden. Before work began, the pool was dull, dated and surrounded by large granite boulders. Today it has clean edges and features charcoal-coloured concrete coping chosen to match the newly-installed paving. Picking up on the colour of the paving and coping, the existing timber fence was painted Woodland Grey.
A new deck was built using blackbutt. The same hardwood was used to clad the new raised garden beds and the retaining wall. The warm natural tones of the timber work with the modern charcoal colour of concrete pavers. Adding to the amenity of the backyard, an outdoor shower was built,a raised sun bed constructed around a large established tree, and the existing poolside cabana upgraded.
The plants were chosen for screening and colour contrast and include Bambusa textilis ‘Gracilis’, Liriope muscari ‘Evergreen Giant’, Philodendron ‘Xanadu’, Syzygium australe ‘Resilience’ and Viburnum odoratissimum. They give the pool area a refreshing tropical twist that works in tandem with the coastal aesthetic to create an open, inviting and relaxed space for outdoor entertaining, or for just unwinding after a hectic week at work.
The Pavers are available from Cabana at 16A Transvaal Ave, Double Bay. 02 93634444.
